Polar Bear Craft for Preschooler

I love easy Valentines crafts for kids because when things get too complicated, your child isn’t the one making the craft, you are! Simple, hands-on activities allow kids to explore their creativity while having fun. One of our favorite projects is this adorable polar bear Valentine’s craft, which is not only mess-free (besides a little paint and glue) but also perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.

This Valentines Day craft for kids is simple, engaging, and helps develop fine motor skills. Plus, it only requires a few basic supplies!

Create the Background: Start by pouring a blob of red paint in the center of the cardstock. Using a fork, let your child spread the paint across the paper to create a textured background. This technique is fun, easy, and adds a unique touch to the craft!

Materials:

  • Thick pink paper (cardstock recommended)
  • Black construction paper
  • Red Paint
  • Plastic fork
  • White Paper (index cards work well)
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
  • Pencil

Make the Polar Bear’s Ears: While the paint dries, fold a 3 x 5 index card in half and draw a half-circle along the folded edge. Cut along the line to create two symmetrical ears. If you don’t have an index card, regular white paper works great.

Cut Out the Face Details: Using black construction paper, draw and cut out a small triangle for the bear’s nose. Then, on white paper, draw an oval shape for the snout and cut it out.

Assemble the Polar Bear: Once the painted background is dry, let your child put the polar bear together! Encourage them to glue the ears, snout, nose, and googly eyes in place. If they want to get creative with the placement, that’s okay, abstract polar bears are just as cute! You can also ask your toddler questions like, “Where do you think the polar bear’s ears go?”

Disney UP Valentine’s Craft

The Disney movie UP is so sweet that I wanted to make a valentines day craft for kids that incorporated balloons. This is also a great activity to teach your preschooler simple shapes when building the UP house.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

First, I drew all the pieces on construction paper to make the house. I used red for the house and purple for the door and windows.

Materials:

  • Cardstock or construction paper
  • Different colored paints
  • Scissors (or safety scissors for kids)
  • Pen or marker
  • Glue

Next, my 4 year old cut out the pieces to build the house! This surprised me because she did an awesome job with regular scissors. If it’s not perfect, don’t worry about it! Full mastery of cutting shapes may not fully develop until around age 6.

Let your child glue the pieces together to build the house.

The great part about these crafts for kids is that they can easily be adapted. I let her use her thumb to make the balloons. It didn’t give me the vibe I wanted, but she loved it. If you want the balloons to look more like balloons, a less messy alternative is attaching pom poms to clothespins, which you can buy at your local Dollar Store.

Then I took a pen and drew lines from her thumbprints to the house to make it look like balloons were coming from the house. Write at the top, “You’re my greatest adventure,” and your done! This is a cute preschool activity to send home!

Heart Shaped Stamp

Can you fold and cut? Yes? That’s all you need to do for this toilet paper roll craft. Teach your little one what a heart looks like and let them stamp away! It’s the perfect valentines day craft for kids because it helps to develop your preschooler’s fine motor skills and it’s FUN.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

First, I taped two pieces of white paper together because I wanted a BIG heart for my 4 year old to have more space for the next step. This is just what I had on hand.

I folded the taped pieces in half, drew half the heart, and cut it out. Then I wrote heart on it (because why not?) and it’s ready to go!

Materials:

  • Cardstock
  • Different colored paints
  • Scissors (or safety scissors for kids)
  • Pen or marker
  • Toilet Paper Roll
  • Tape (optional)

Next, and this is just slightly a pain in the ass if you’re a perfectionist, you need to fold one side of the toilet paper roll into the shape of a heart, then you’re going to rip off the tiny piece inside that sticks out when you fold it.

Let your child dip the heart into the paint, but ensure it is pressed hard enough to cover the entire heart. Then they use the heart as a stamp. Let them have fun with it!!

Face-in-Hole Heart Cut Out

This heart craft is my favorite because it is EASY and so cute for a quick Valentine’s Day photoshoot of your little one.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

preschool arts and crafts

You’ll need a large piece of cardboard to cut out a hole big enough to fit your child’s face.

I drew a heart shape on the cardboard and cut it out for my 4 year old.

  • Pink or Red Paint

The second and last step is to let your preschooler decorate the heart however they like. My daughter got a kick out of this Valentine’s Day craft. She loved looking at the pictures we took!

Love Monster Craft

Reading children’s books gives me many arts and crafts ideas for my preschooler. It’s a fun way to incorporate a lesson, even at home. This is especially great for visual learners. The Love monster puppet can teach your child about emotions and friendship, and the book is a cute addition to your library for Valentine’s Day.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Gather everything you’re going to use for the activity. Use what you have! I had a cardboard apple sauce box (which I saved because I hoard cardboard for crafts and used a piece of it for the blue heart).

I also had red and black poster boards that I used instead of construction paper. The cardboard is just to make it sturdy, so if you have cardstock, use that instead.

Materials:

  • Blue, orange, black, and red construction paper
  • Two large googly eyes
  • Scissors (or safety scissors for kids)
  • Pen or marker
  • Red pipe cleaner
  • Cardboard
  • Glue

Next, I drew three squares. I made the red and black poster board the same size because we’ll be matching them up. I also drew a square on cardboard and made it slightly smaller than the red and black pieces. My 4 year old cut out the pieces and then we were ready for glue!

Put glue on one side of the cardboard and paste it to the red square, leaving some room at the top. Do the same thing to the other side but before you match the black square to the red square, lay down two popsicle sticks on top of the glue, as seen in third picture below.
